Control: Bear Down…

I, Daniel Trump, won’t quit the Chicago Bears.
I know, I know.
I’m supposed to pick another team.
I don’t want another team.
I like this team.
I don’t care if they are 2–7. I don’t care if they were 3–14 last year. I won’t quit being a Chicago Bears fan.
The Chicago Bears are, hysterically and uncontrollably, a disaster. They suck this year — with pretty good players. They have Jaylon Johnson, one of the best cover corners in the league. TJ Edwards is near the league lead in tackles. The Bears traded for Montez Sweat, a defensive end who is a veteran, quality pass rusher. They have players at all levels on defense. Their defense has been giving a better effort every game.
The offense?
Similarly they have weapons but haven’t put everything together yet.
On paper they are fantastic. The offensive line is better. They invested very heavily in improving the o-line, and it shows. Teven Jenkins and Darnell Wright are dominant on the right side of the line, and Braxton Jones is back at left tackle. Lucas Patrick and Cody Whitehair are good if not great veterans until Nate Davis gets back and the Bears draft a center.
The running game is good. Khalil Herbert has averaged over 5 yards a carry both last year and so far this year — although he has been injured for a while. D’onta Foreman is an excellent back who has run for a lot of yards while Herbert has been injured. The Bears o-line enjoys run blocking and does it well.
The receivers aren’t as bad as last year, either. DJ Moore is an outstanding receiver on pace for a 1,000 yard season, and Cole Kmet is a fantastic possession tight end who gets oodles of touchdowns a year. Darnell Mooney is a solid second option at wide receiver. He isn’t getting enough passes to get a huge contract but has had a 1,000 yard season in the past.
And then quarterback.
The difficult position to evaluate for a football team is always the quarterback. The Bears have Justin Fields and Tyson Bagent. Justin Fields holds the ball too long and takes too many sacks. Tyson Bagent throws too many interceptions, throws too short, and doesn’t have the necessary arm strength to win in this league. Together they make one great quarterback — but only one can play at a time.
I prefer Justin Fields. Justin Fields is our quarterback. I hear rumblings that the quarterback will change next year — and then we will have a new start and will be starting another rebuild. We’ll start over from the bottom again.
So they have all this — they have all these components, these pieces, and they aren’t winning, and it’s kind of pissing me off. I’m frustrated by the two years of losing we’ve endured under Matt Eberflus. The team hasn’t won very many games. The team hasn’t won two in a row. The team hasn’t beaten a good quarterback. The team hasn’t shown that it can beat a contender.
And now we’re looking at deep-sixing everything and starting over?
I’m a loyal fan, but I don’t know if I have the energy for that. That’s a lot of losing before any winning. I wanted the team to be good this year, and they’re not winning — despite all these great players.
But I won’t quit being a Bears fan.
I don’t give up on things easily.
I haven’t given up on my writing career either. I don’t give up when things are bad. I work harder, try harder, and root harder. So let’s go Bears, and Bear Down. Fight, and try to win more games this year than you won last year. Fight for every last yard. I won’t stop being a Bears fan because they are bad.
Thanks, and take care, friends.
