Control: Religion

I, Dalton Lewis, believe in agnosticism. I believe that there’s not enough evidence yet to say if God is real or not. God could have created everything with the Big Bang. God could, in that scenario, be watching us do everything and live our lives from afar. God could be real. It’s possible.

I want to write a book about young people and their relation to religion. I remember not believing when I was a kid, but other people believed firmly in someone looking after them. I don’t know why religion seemed so important to some people and so unimportant to others, but that’s what happened. I inherited my parents’ beliefs in religion and politics. I don’t know if everyone does that, but I did it. I believed in my parents’ agnosticism.

People love God. People really, really love God, and people hate Satan. Why? I’m a neutral observer. Satan tried to stand up to God and say that He isn’t necessarily the top guy or the most important guy or anything. Satan rebelled and lost. The Old Testament doesn’t really have a concrete lord of evil in it; the New Testament introduced us to the lord of evil, someone who tempted Jesus Christ by offering him everything. Jesus said no. I’m proud of Jesus; he seems like a good guy, humble, quiet, and good.

Most of my friends believe in religion. I don’t know why; I know that people, way back when, wanted an answer: why are we here? They also wanted something to happen to their loved ones when they die. They wanted something to exist other than the physical world which seemed so broken and terrible and unfair. People die, and there needs to be an answer, or else the world it terrible. If nothingness is all there is after death then our loved ones have nothing and are gone forever. That is so terrible that people invented religion as an answer. People go to Heaven if they are good. That is tempting. I want that to be true. I’m just not convinced.

I sit here, in my room, in my parents’ town home, drinking soda and eating tortilla chips and salsa. They don’t believe in God. Mom says that God can’t exist because God punishes suicides, and I know some suicides that we want to be able to go to Heaven. I know some people have died, and I hope something else: science.

I want science to learn how to resurrect people in the future in the real world. I think that’s something better to hope for: something rational and real and scientific. I think that in a few hundred years we will come back. All of us. We will be brought back and given new bodies and new lives. We will become someone.

Does that mess with Christianity? I think so. Christians will want to prove their God’s existence, and that might happen. We might learn that someone created us. It’s possible. We might meet that person. It’s possible that some entity created The Big Bang. I would love for that to be real and to meet that person. I think that there has to be something out there in outer space, right? There has to be something. We will find out when we explore the universe more thoroughly. I am eagerly awaiting their findings.

Thanks, and take care, friends.
