Brief post today.

I, Daniel Trump, watched game three of the Chicago Bears preseason schedule, their last game. They lost 24–21 to Buffalo. Buffalo played their legendary offense for their first drive of the game. They went down the field and scored a touchdown on the Bears. I was disappointed that one of the best teams in the league was able to dismantle the defense of the Bears, but individual plays weren’t terrible.

Assorted notes:

  1. Tyrique Stevenson really struggled, committing penalties and giving up big touchdowns during preseason. I know he’s a highly-regarded rookie. He is going to work hard and need more chances. He will do better as the regular season starts. He just needs more experience.
  2. The Bears played without three-fifths of their offensive line, with Teven Jenkins, Nate Davis, and Darnell Wright all out with injuries. The run blocking wasn’t there and the Bears rely on the running game to get their offense to work. Teven Jenkins will be out for the forseeable future, but Nate Davis and Darnell Wright will be expected to be back in time for the regular season. That will enormously help the Bears and their offense.
  3. The Bears didn’t have enough pass rush, with only one good sack that I noticed in this game. They didn’t stop the Bills enough. Also the defensive line didn’t do enough to stop the Bills and their running game. The run defense is a little better but still not good enough. Still, it’s better than in years previous, and Pickens and Dexter have a lot of promise.
  4. Tyler Scott appears to be the Bears kick and punt returner. He fielded all the punts correctly — that he was given — and returned a kick to the opposing 42 in the game. He’s good, and Velus Jones, Jr. isn’t good at returning kicks. Scott is the clear choice.
  5. Tyson Bagent’s quarterback numbers weren’t good, but he managed a drive in which the Bears went down the field and scored a touchdown. He can manage the game effectively and make smart decisions with the football. He is a good second quarterback if the unthinkable happens and Justin Fields gets hurt.
  6. Injuries were bad today. A lot of players didn’t play, and several players were carted off. Noah Sewell was carted off, and there was also an injury to Doug Kramer, the center. Gabe Huoy also was carted off. This game is just too dangerous.
  7. Roschon Johnson and D’onta Foreman both ran fine behind a line which didn’t give them enough holes. The o-line didn’t give them enough holes because so many starters were injured, but Johnson is a great back who bruises his way through the middle of the field.
  8. Jet sweeps consistently got good yardage. I was impressed. I didn’t think it was a good play, but apparently I was wrong.
  9. Trevis Gipson and Terell Lewis clearly deserve to make the team as defensive ends along with Ngaouke and Walker. They have played the best in preseason. I hope the rumor of trading Gipson is a false one.
  10. Overall the Bears didn’t play terribly. A lot of good individual plays were made, and the Bears only lost by 3 points to one of the best teams in the league. This game could have been a lot worse.

The Bears play the Green Bay Packers on Sunday the 10th of September. I don’t know that they can win but hope for the best. We will see what happens when the team is finalized on Tuesday.

Thanks, and take care, friends.
