I, Daniel Trump, got to my friend Terry’s house in time to watch the Oklahoma-Arkansas State game. It wasn’t much of a game, as it turned out. Oklahoma won 73–0. We didn’t watch the entirety of the game, though, because on the other station was the Colorado-TCU game.

TCU had been the underdog team that made it to the finals of the championships of college football last year and lost to Georgia. They were no longer the underdogs. They became the favored team, a team expected to do great and win lots of games. They were playing against Colorado in their first game of the season.

Colorado won one game all last season and lost their games by an average of 29 points or so. Colorado used to be a proud football program but had become a program in free fall: no longer a respectable organization. They decided to hire someone accused of being a showman, a PR guy, a talker — Deion Sanders. They wanted Deion Sanders to turn their program around — a rebuild. This was supposed to be year one of a rebuild. Nothing much was expected.

Deion Sanders was, in case you don’t know football, the greatest cornerback in the history of football. He played beautifully and intercepted 53 passes in the regular season and intercepted 5 passes in the playoffs and won 2 championships. He was one of the fastest and most skilled players in the NFL’s history.

Colorado hired Deion Sanders as their head coach. It was a big deal in football circles. He recruited 68 new scholarship players — mostly from the transfer portal. He hired Travis Hunter — who plays both ways.

People get exhausted playing either wide receiver or defensive back. No one plays both. This guy, Travis Hunter, is so great physically that he plays both offense and defense. He had over 100 yards receiving as a receiver and had a touchdown-saving interception as a defensive back. He was able to play well over 100 plays in the game.

Shedeur Sanders, who called Deion dad, threw for over 500 yards in the game — playing very well. He also did something great. The team did something great.

They won the game.

They defeated TCU in a close game by scoring in the fourth quarter and then stopping the TCU offense at the end of the game. Then they ran for a first down rushing to ice the game. The team did everything right and won the game by a score of 45–42.

Dylan Edwards had four touchdowns as a running back. That’s fantastic.

More than anything, though, I got the impression that these players loved Deion, and Deion loved these players. They cared about him. They believed in him. They fought desperately for him. They did anything for him. That is what I found most impressive about Deion Sanders: his players feel so passionate about him that they try harder than the average team’s players.

I’m looking forward to seeing how Colorado does going forward.

Look out, Georgia.

Thanks, and take care, friends.
